Background. Maxwell is reluctant to read in class and I have discovered it is because he doesn't want to make mistakes in class.
Action. To support him I had a discussion with Dad and explained the situation. Dad was very supportive, and said he would have a chat with Maxwell. I am giving him space to read, to a soft toy, to a friend of his choice, and to Granny Ann (who comes in on Friday mornings) of the text when he is very familiar with it. after a discussion with colleagues, I let him select texts from the book boxes, guiding him towards texts that I think will interest him. We are recording his successes on a chart , showing when he reads without closing down.
